There have been many excellent responses to the OP...

... and I will only add two points from my Christian perspective.

First, our love for an enemy comes from God, and is a response to his love for us:

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another... We love because he first loved us. - 1 John 4:7-11, 19 NIV

Second, loving the enemy is redemptive, possibly for the enemy...

Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth... - 2 Timothy 2:25 NIV

... and, more certainly, for us:

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven... - Matthew 5:44-45 NIV

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. - Matthew 6:14-15 NIV
