I agree that Christ is the only way to heaven...

... but God is the one who grants faith and repentance:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast. - Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth... - 2 Timothy 2:25 NIV

God sometime grants these things at the very end of a person's life, such as is recorded in Luke 23:39-43:

One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

The point is, God may have converted Gandhi as he lay dying; since you do not know otherwise, you cannot, and should not, confidently assert that God did not do so. The most that you can safely say is, "Gandhi is in hell if he did not repent and turn to Christ" -- and it is far better to hope that Ghandi did repent, rather than hoping that Gandhi is in hell.
