Text is honestly the best way to express ideas and share relevant facts. In person exchanges are generally ruled by emotion and whoever is louder or snarkier.
EDIT: Actually, let me point out as well that in person is the perfect time to force your ideas through the threat of the physical. "Come over here and say that to my face." I don't know why, but it just sounds like a prelude to violence. It's nice that the internet lets rational discussions occur in a place where the losers (and I don't mean loser as a person, I mean as the loser of the argument) can't say, "I'll beat your face in" as a method of winning the argument.
