In my small town

the fire department is 100% volunteer. All the money they need are raised through bake sales, chicken bbq's, and a small $20 per person yearly "contribution" tax that is added to your property tax.

I've never understood why police patrol couldn't be volunteer as well. If we trust volunteer untrained men to drive around giant trucks, put out fires, and chop through houses with axes, surely we could trust volunteers to patrol our streets.

My town has a population of rougly 900 people, and yet we have three police officers on duty at all times. Their main job is to hang out at the convience store eating and drinking coffee, or pull people over for speeding (35 in a 25 mostly). Volunteers could do without the speeding offenses and focus on safety without having to fill a quota.
