Is the child old enough to be able to understand the gravity of what s/he did? If so, then no physical force is necessary; words would be far more effective for both sides. If not, then I don't see what's wrong with a smack. My parents did it, but only rarely, and only when I was too young/immature to grasp what exactly I did that was wrong.

The problem is that so many people equate even a tiny "McFly" smack to a punch in the face, to the point where even grabbing your kid's arm to pull him away from the store window would count as "abuse" in some circles.
