Interesting snippet from wikipedia article.

listing many reasons why Mexico didnt take up Germany's offer. Among others being that Mexico was outmatched and could probably not rely on Germany for assistance as the british controlled the atlantic trade routes. This part sticks out to me though:

"If by some chance Mexico had the military means to win the conflict with the U.S. and retake the area in question, Mexico would have had severe difficulty accommodating the large, primarily English-speaking population who were well supplied with guns and ammunition."

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state...... you guys know the rest I'm sure.
