I imagine they might threaten a very harsh sentence unless he pleads guilty to a felony, offering to give him probation and a lot less jail time in a plea bargain. But my hunch is that they just want to pin him down with a felony to restrict his right to gun ownership for political reasons and will use plea bargaining to try to accomplish that, in which case he probably wouldn't be able to appeal a guilty verdict if he takes the bait.
