Something to say to defenders

I've run into a surprising number of people that actually support this invasion of privacy. Here's something that's worked for me as far as getting people to think (not necessary change their mind right on the spot, but to at least think things through).

A lot say that this kind of spying is necessary because of terrorism. I asked them to name some things that the government does to gather intelligence on terrorism that is unnecessary. So far none of the supporters are able to name anything. So I ask them to seriously consider, in the privacy of their own thoughts, whether they truly believe that there is not a single example of overreach by the government in the name of terrorism.
