Been there and done that

No license, homemade placeholders in the license plate holder. That was me for nearly three years. Yes, it is true that the real law and many court cases confirm that one does not need a license. The reality is that the state knows this but doesn't care. There need be no law because there is the law of public opinion and custom. If the vast majority believe that you are required to be licensed then you will never win.

Try this and I guarantee that you will be stopped. Cops are ignorant thugs. They will tase you, beat you up, arrest you, steal your money, plant evidence, lie through their teeth and impound your car. They will force you to appear in traffic court where you must explain to a (so-called) judge all the reasons why you are traveling by right and not driving. The judge will let you argue the merits in court at another time (if you pay first). Maybe even in front of a jury.

You will appear in court and do your public speaking debut. The jury (read clovers, sheeple, herd) will find you guilty. You will forfeit your car, pay a very large fine, pay court costs and may even see jail time. Jail? Yes, because you will be so frustrated and pissed-off that you will say something out of anger and get a contempt charge.

Now, you can do all of this assuming that you do not have a life or job and can devote an exorbitant amount of time and money for your defense. Meanwhile the state will attack you with an army of lawyers and unlimited taxpayer funds. They would have to because if they lost a case like this it would end the steady stream of easy revenue.

But the court will never allow you to win. If it looks to them that you might be able to make a good case, they will simply drop the charges or keep postponing dates and dragging things out until you are broken, exhausted or just give up in frustration.

Assuming that you could endure this fiasco to a dismissal, have you won? Nope. You get your car back, go back out on the road and five miles later the cops pop the lights on you again. And because you never actually get a win in a court of record, you will once again appear in the traffic star chamber.

Bottom line. Pick your battles carefully. It is nearly impossible to lock horns and do battle with the Beast. I know, I've been there and done that. Also, if you can't have fun with this, I would not recommend it.

However, I do have a couple of friends that still travel by right after more than 14 years (Kingdom of Heaven plates and license). They have no permanent home and are essentially gypsies. You can only be licensed if you are a resident. When the cops pull up their names, they cannot find a residence in any state for them. They are mostly always released after a stop.
