What I mean by that is...say for instance there was a http://blog.dailypaul.com - It wouldn't be a fake or suspicious domain. A web administrator from the DP would have had to create a subdomain called blog.
The idea is the same with http://pages.townhall.com - the reason for subdomains is to create a website that is set aside from the main one - it makes for better organization when something you've created expands too large.
They have another subdomain http://finance.townhall.com/
Google has several... http://maps.google.com - http://news.google.com - http://play.google.com
