The point I made during the GOP purge of Ron Paul delegates was that the attempt would turn all delegates against the despots at the top. Telling delegates, or voters, or the public that you think they're too stupid to decide policy is never going to be popular. It brought Santorum supporters and Ron Paul supporters together, just as it unites other countries when we attack them.
Whistle-blowers, by going straight to the public, put the despots in the position of trying to make the case that the public can't be trusted. The public generally doesn't like that idea.
