I clicked here from the "Chess" post and it is actually a perfect example of how Chess relates to politics. This is a genius move btw.

By putting pressure on a foreign automaker like Mercedes to do a full investigation it pits the car manufacturer's goals of proving their vehicles are safe against whatever pressure the gov. might put on them to keep the incident covered up. Mercedes now has an incentive to prove there was some kind of foul play to avoid costly recalls or bad press. (Germans are dead serious about their engineering) It is even better that they are a foreign company, if it was GM (Government Motors) it would be much easier to manipulate the data. Germany is not too keen on the US right now due to the Gold mixup so this could help pull weight behind the investigation.
