You brought up a great example of what I've heard from the "Tea Party" types. We, libertarians, are also being hit from the left "OWS" types. Governement should stay out of marriage, drugs, abortion, war, etc., but they need to redistribute wealth and provide cradle to grave benefits at gunpoint.
When debating "selective statists", I point out the inconsistentcy of their arguments. They argue that government is providing for the common good and advocate that if we just get the "right leaders" in governement everything will be great. They are searching for those morally perfect people, unaffected by positions of power, who will still use violence to further an agenda in the name of promoting the general welfare. This is the great unresolvable conflict in their arguments.
