I live in an area where eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls are a welcome and beautiful part of our rural environment. Most folks enjoy watching them sweeping over fields after haying; diving in and swooping up mice and other varmints. Less vectors, less crop spoilage, disease, and some great photo ops. It's all good!
However, Franklin made some keen observations on the eagle's predatory nature that gave him reasons to reject it's acceptance as our national symbol. What is acceptable behavior for wild raptors should never be adopted as a role-model for the national "peacekeeping" and foreign policy, but how sadly we have! We have taken on the worse aspects of this predator; while pretending to be all wise and strong, as it's noble image appears.
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have the exact measure of the injustice and wrong which will be imposed on them. - Frederick Douglass
