Ah ok. Good news, then! I promise, Peirce should be milder/more gentle, yet is still very nicely laying down the basics important to be familiar with.

You can often recognize the masters as their ability to present the profound and real stuff, yet with the very minimum pre-requisites for the reader curious enough. :)

After that one, maybe a 2nd read of Flannery's will make more sense, and next, you might end up loving to grok Claude Shannon's early works as well ;)
