Because they can't hide it.

And the best way to manage something that can't be hidden is to control the dialog.

If you notice, most of the reports focus on things like:

"He's a high school drop out."
"He's a traitor."
"The government must be incompetent for hiring him."

This forces the debate to be about him, character assassinates him, and let's the government try to play stupid instead of evil --

Obama saying, "I knew nothing about X." As little as Obama "knows", he must be fricking Socrates. Feign strength when you have weakness, and weakness when you have strength. So they are evil, and would rather you believe they are stupid.
