People feel threatened when their cultural world views are challenged and threatened. The barriers people erect to stop the flow of information can be in the form of mild displeasure or can take the form of name calling, conspiracy theorist, the tin foil hat comment or sometimes worse, them's fightin words. It really depends on how committed people are to their own world views as they think they know them to be. I imagine this is where the term "sticking your head in the sand" came from countering the comments on the other side.

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it; ignorance may deride it. But in the end, there it is...Winston Churchill.
