Just as foreign aid enslaves countries and forms of welfare make dependent the beneficiaries, the mere existence of government makes the people dependent on whatever the government is their to "protect."
In the case of the US, the government was supposed to secure the rights of the People. This caused the People become complacent and turn their focus elsewhere.
Is it wise to give a group of people a power that needs to be checked? The need for checking admits a lack of trust, and if trust cannot exist, the power should never be given.
