I think the problem is more about abuse of power and opportunity. A totally free people will only desire to live free and peacefully, but won't always perform the vigilance to guard that. The question then becomes which model is least susceptible to corruption.
Holding rigidly to what the Constitution dictates including an actual gold standard would successfully keep the federal government at bare bones. It's up to the people, though, to continue that.
