That's the problem

Zimmerman's a bully, he started something, he had a hidden weapon which escalated the situation in a manner Martin didn't know about.

Zimmerman should have immediately told Martin that he was a neighborhood watchman, that he suspected Martin of being a vandal or a cat burglar or whatever and that 911 had been called.

If Martin appeared to approach and try to engage him in a fight, Zimmerman had a DUTY to de-escalate and protect the firearm, to place his hand on the holster and tell Martin to stop advancing. If Martin continued to advance, he should brandish.

The fact he let himself be in a compromised position where it was kill or be killed was negligent.

I would have convicted him for involuntary manslaughter. He didn't kill him on purpose, but his multiple incompetent actions made loss of life inevitable.
