Just because, in the aftermath, 20-20 hindvision, the absolute safest thing for him to do would have been to run in the opposite direction, that doesn't either legitimize the attack by Trayvon Martin, or negate a self-defense argument on his part. The fact that it was raining and hoodies are everywhere are just parts o of the whole picture, he looked suspicious enough that Zimmerman did call the "real" police (deputized by Barney Fife no doubt) just like you would prefer. He is allowed to use his judgment and say a guy looks suspicious, and the more you read about Trayvon, the more suspicious he looks, and not at all because of his color, either.
