The OP brings up the interesting point; why wasn't Zimmerman arrested at first? Why did the police take his word as proof? The police ran a tox screen on Martin's body, and they ran a background check on Martin. They should have done the same for Zimmerman. Then, they would have seen Zimmerman's record and had some more reason to suspect him.

True, the police may have simply looked at the physical injuries (which during the trial was revealed to be not significant) and come to a conclusion. But Martin was only 17; that had to be a red flag. Plus, always do due diligence when someone dies.
