I think the Zimmerman case is very significant

It involves the second amendment and the legitimacy of the primal right to self defense. It involves the corruption of the legal system and the concept of reasonable doubt. It involves the corruption in media (evidence was altered and broadcast in a biasing way). It involves the potential for Federal circumvention of state justice, with the possibility of "civil rights" charges.

You call it a "shiny object". Maybe you just can't see the significance of this story.
