In my household...

We have never allowed the children any toy guns.

It not a good mix, when you expect children to be responsible enough to handle real guns.

In fact, it's a bit of a misstatement "not allowed." We simply never gave them any. And they never had much desire for any beyond crude homemade wooden ones, because they understand well the difference, and why guns are not toys. (And they also know (real) guns can be great fun when handled responsibly.) For the same reason, we don't do airsoft and such things. If a firearm is ever pointed at a human, one should be ready to take responsibility for that person's death.
