Many social scientists believe that having a population with many military-trained members had many benefits. Primarily, it breaks down barriers: CEOs and poor people, white and black, north and south, etc. all serve together and end up understanding each other. They then go back home and realize and are more willing to work with others. They are used to working hard, working under stress, and dealing with pressure.
They are more cultured, having spent time in other parts of the world. They have more discipline. They are trained in arms and can act as in a civilian capacity to deter crime.
Politically, they know the "horrors" of war and are less willing to blindly support it. They have more patriotism and are more willing to "give-back" to their country. Simply by being less sheltered, they are more easily able to interact with people of different backgrounds. Etc. etc.
