i think i've seen this one

thing is, most of the time, we don't have the option to call grandma to find out why. in which case, it makes sense to be cautious when discarding a practice we don't understood. perhaps not a simple practice, like cooking, but at least when dealing with complex systems that we did not design.

taken to the extreme, we end up with the view that if we don't understand why a practice exists, it should probably be discarded. because we think we can rationally design of a better way. its the kind of thinking that made economic planning and social engineering seem like a good way to order society about 100 years ago.
