Seems to me that was precisely the point.
Just look at the differences in the responses to both cases.
Half the people on this site were tripping over themselves trying to defend Trayvon Martin and prop him up as yet another victim of big bad whitey (-Hispanic), despite the fact that he was clearly guilty, but when it comes to just about any given black-on-white crime, it suddenly turns into "who cares about color?"
The difference in attitudes over the two stories, or any two given black-on-white versus white-on-black crimes stories is more than enough to be discussion-worthy, IMO.
