Do not confuse the state with a state, as in among the United States.

In first approximation, THE state is essentially one, and only one, central government, almighty over the people - in the end, such a thing WILL DENY what once was known as "the United States", with local governments - plural, with a fair diversity, distributed over space.

THE state is what you have in France, Sweden, Italy, Greece, Germany, ... you name it.

And you can see "how great" it works when it lets itself fall for collectivism, with 'MOBcracies.
