The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)
The "thief" works through the natural mind of man, though his lusts, his pride and ambition, especially in the corridors of power of government and religion.
When men depart wholesale from the Law of God (manifested in the United States by the absolute contempt for and mere lip service given to the Constitution in government and the lawlessness in the Christian churches) then God visits upon them all the judgements of the Law written in the Law of Tribulation in Deuteronomy 29.
The sickness is ultimately a spiritual one and requires a spiritual remedy. The people of God, the Christians, MUST repent if the blindness that afflicts them is to be healed. This will then spread to the rest of their nation.
I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. (Revelation 3:1)
I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:15-19)
A prayer went up from the entire American people in 2001: "God bless America". This prayer is being answered but not in the way the people expect. America, as the leading nation in the world, is being subjected to heretofore unimagined pressures. These are designed to bring her to her knees and will eventually result in the determined conversion, turning and repentance of the Christians, leading the nations into the abundant life promised by the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)
