By most accounts was a gentleman, he did not endorse racism, he battled party bosses, he got shot... the bullet probably wouldn't have been fatal, but his doctor (a pompous ass)thought that Lister was wrong as he probed the wound with his hands and instruments on the floor of a dirty station. They practically invented air conditioning to keep him cool in his room, Bell worked hard to invent a device to find the bullet using induction noise... would have worked too but the pompous Doc only let him check one side of the body.. the wrong one of course... anyway he lived a short life in an amazing time but did no harm as I can see... as President at least...
