Developing a counter-cultural mindset comes with great risk to the actor because it removes the cognitive anchors that come from the certainty of conventional wisdom and consensual validation. Many thought revolutionaries throughout history later developed mental health problems and almost always had interpersonal despair. Constantly looking beyond the surface can be a lonely exercise and is the reason that most people do not do it. Not doing it is a psychological defense, and an important one as it keeps a person grounded.
My suggestion for what it worth is to pursue alternative media including the Daily Paul with the awareness that about 20% of it probably comes from someone's loose associations. Look for buzz-phrases like, "It has been reported" or "Therefore, it can be concluded that" and remember that what might look like a logical down-river conclusion, may be something that came from a loose association way upstream.
We activists need to provide information that is not too far afield from consensual reality, or the receiver will not be able to override his defense system to hear it.
