Comment: gun license vs. driver's license

gun license vs. driver's license

If you obtain a license to own a firearm, you are expected to use it responsibly and not twirl 2 guns in your hands with the safeties off while walking past a school.

If you obtain a driver's license, you are expected to drive responsibly and not endanger others as well. Anyone who has tried texting and driving (I have) knows how horribly distracting it is (I never do it anymore and have a voice-assist Android phone now).

Everyone on the DP believes in living in a free society, but there are limits. While I dislike laws that tell me I can or cannot do something, they are sometimes necessary evils.

Unless you have a real suggestion for stopping people from texting and driving, we are going to have to live with this. And please don't suggest that the evidence for the level of distraction seems thin; drivers doing their makeup, using a handheld phone, or texting all exhibit terrible driving behavior. I see them drifting/swerving, going too slow in the left lane on the interstate, and hard braking when they "wake up".

Again, if anyone has a better suggestion on how to curtail irresponsible driving, I'd love to hear it.

With liberty and justice for all...who can afford it.
