Seems...

...like the point of the story and the purpose for the heroine and heroes is combatting and subverting such system, struggling against it, not embracing or justifying it. I haven't read the books yet, but I've seen the first film, and I don't see how the story is in any way celebrating or encouraging the things you mentioned. It is about Love (as Michael noted) overcoming such darkness.

The people in the capital who get their kicks off of the games are portrayed as decadent and corrupt, aren't they? Like Rome with their circuses.
