Honestly...

I strongly suggest the Microsoft antivirus and antimalware option if you have MS as an operating system for a few reasons. First, I cannot see them doing damage to their own product especially when they are sharing it for free. They already have and will always have access anyways. Second, it updates by it's self in the background without interfering with anything you are doing, it can be forgotten about yet it is always doing it's job. The updates are just bundled into your normal windows updates as they download. Last, It eliminates a third party being involved with the processes, In reality you want as little of this as possible. The only other option for me would be as I have been told many times, and working on, is switch to a Linux OS.
