Yeah, that is a recurring theme in the Lord of the Rings -- the green countryside, the forests, the old ways under seige by the likes of Saruman who dabble in not only occult alliances with the dark powers but the corrupting influences of machinery, gunpowder, authoritarian government (see 'The Scouring of the Shire' in RotK, for example). The uprooting of ancient trees and their subsequent revenge at Isengard with the Ents echoes scenes from Tolkien's friend CS Lewis as well in his Narnian stories (esp. Prince Caspian) and his poem 'The Future of Forestry'.
