Communities aren't always based on sharing a physical location; many are based on having similar interests or experiences or a shared heritage, etc.
I don't consider myself to be part of the "DP community" or any other internet community either, but tens of millions the world over do, and yes that can lead to meeting in a physical place and/or affecting one's life offline, so I don't understand the 'real' qualifier.
