Many of you have probably seen the new shocking Live Leak video of a motorist driving a Range Rover in New York City. In the video, the driver has a frightening confrontation with a large group of motorcyclists who create a road block by surrounding the vehicle, repeatedly try to force open the car doors, and spawn a chase that lasts several minutes. The chase ends as the driver is violently pulled out of his vehicle and is severely beaten in the street in front of his wife and five-month-old child. Although we don't have all the facts (see Daily Mail article for more details) and we weren't able to see what happened before the initial confrontation occurred, from a security perspective, our goal with this post is to analyze the situation and provide important feedback to clients and potential clients regarding how to react if faced with a similar scenario. We also want to demonstrate how armoring can help a motorist stay safe while under this type of attack.

Clear and Present Danger
Ben Swann / KTSM9

It was January of this year when a manager for the Lear plant in Juarez was rescued by Mexican soldiers. The man, who's name was never released had been kidnapped while driving to work 5 days before. Kidnappers had asked for 2 Million dollars in ransom.

Around the same time, also in January, another executive working for a plant in Juarez comes under attack. This time, a woman working for the American company Delphi. Armed men reportedly attempted to carjack her.

Delphi executives were tight-lipped about the incident, only saying that the woman, who was also not identified, managed to speed off and make it to the plant safely.

"Right now, you don't know who's who up there and you don't know who's next." says Private Investigator Jay J. Armes.

Armes has made a living out of rescuing kidnap victims. In all his years, however, he's never seen a time like this. Especially for American executives who have to work in Juarez.

In fact, Armes says he recently warned a high ranking maquila executive. Armes says after the kidnapping of one of their executives, Lear made the decision to have all their executives work from El Paso.
Other maquilas still have their executives traveling back and forth to Juarez. That's where Armes comes in.

"We have to have a special escort for the executives to see that they get to their post or plant safely and about the time that they have to go back to the U.S., they call us and we have them escorted back to the U.S." says Armes

"A lot of these businessmen that I talk to are concerned about protecting their wives and their children." says Jason Forston, an Executive Vice President with Texas Armoring Corporation.

That concern has meant a booming business for Texas Armoring Corporation. The company in which is based in San Antonio, specializes in creating armored vehicles.

But, we're not just talking about bullet proof glass and armored doors.

"We have a road tack dispensing system so that if someone is chasing you, you flip a switch in your center console and the tacks drop out and you puncture their tires." says Forston.

Not to mention, smokescreens, electric doorhandles, and fortified crash bumpers. The company has had a 100% increase in business from Mexico.

In fact, one of the clients who drives his vehicle in Juarez, we're told, escaped an attempted carjacking just days ago.

"They came up and they tried to shoot the glass, they tried to smash it and he just stepped on the gas, got away and he was completely safe." says Forston.
