"The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", by William L. Shirer

Highly relevant to our day imo. It's long and requires determination to read, but is a wonderful lesson on how a lethargic society can be quickly turned toward tyranny.
Another of my favorites, and quite different, is the historical novel "Agony and the Ecstasy", by Irving Stone. It will quickly engross the reader as it explores the life and times of Michelangelo. A great read.
