Yes, the Freemasons are part of a larger group of secret societies. No, that doesn't include the "illuminati". Or the order of skull & bones. Different long term goals. Look at what the freemasons have done in the past, that we know about. One of those things was the Boston Tea Party, followed by the Declaration of Independence. You shall know them by the fruits of their labors. I would dare to say that the vast majority of Freemasons don't know what the real secret is, and none of them (nor do I) know what the details are. Nor can they find out. The strange thing is that the movie "National Treasure" was fiction, but also got some things so correct. No, the treasure isn't gold, although that literally could exist somewhere.

BTW, Opus Dei is another one of these secret organisations. Opus dei maintains a parrallel hiegarchy all the way to the council of cardinals. They literally have their own priests, bishops & archbishops; whose authority isn't defined by a geographical area. Notice, if you will, that the same kind of negative propaganda is often directed at Opus Dei. The movies The Davinci Code and There Be Dragons are fairly dedicated to using Opus Dei as a classic evil secret society. Is anyone here really going to claim that Opus Dei is a cult? As the many known Freemasons would likely say, (i.e. Ben Franklin, Voltaire, John Hancock, Will Wipple, etc) you should think for yourself.
