Some PD's may be less than dilligent but my experience is the opposite. Trying cases all day every day gives them a lot of experience with judges and prosecutors. They usually get as good or better results than retained counsel and at least in VA don't get paid squat. I've done both. I once tried a negligent homicide case - a four hour trial - and got a princely fee of $112. (I won).

The real problem is with the cops. No judgment. Ultra thin skinned. A lot on sadistic power trips. The girl here also made the cardinal mistake of letting the cops in to begin with and then compounding it by talking to them. The cop assaulting her of couse is without justification and a total over reaction. But this happens all the time in the 'hood.
