If it really was planned,

why bother with airplanes at all? Why not just use explosives?

Explosives, in my opinion, are sufficiently terroristy, and the airplanes make everything vastly more complex. Why complicate an otherwise sound plot?

As an amateur blacksmith and a professional mechanical engineer, I know that ordinary fires can soften steel to only a few percent of its strength at room temperature.
