the difference between the proposed plea deal and what he could get otherwise were too great for him to go for "plan B" of sitting it out for purposes of making a point/ changing the law, etc. I don't believe the "system" views AK as all that significant of a prisoner, to them he is just one of many, and his constitutional theatre is not something they comprehend. So I doubt he was targeted for any specific kind of mistreatment while locked up, just over his views. He just got the normal dose of mistreatment. I'm sure it wasnt a walk in the park, though.
