I recall that in the Bible, Christ indicated that swearing to something shows there is something wrong; and to let your Yes be Yes, and Your No be No. (Do not ask me to remember the book and exact location and though.... maybe someone could present it ) It all has to do with "Consent"; Often listed in the Law of Nature:

(APP Note: See these exact words in the Rights of the Colonists) For the preservation of property being the end of government, and that for which men enter into society, it necessarily supposes and requires that the people should have property, without which they must be supposed to lose that by entering into society which was the end for which they entered into it; too gross an absurdity for any man to own.
Locke #186: "...It remains only to be considered whether promises, extorted by force, without right, can be thought consent, and how far they bind.
To which I shall say, they bind NOT AT ALL;"..."
