My father would say, "it doesn't cost any more to be nice", he stressed manors, and the importance of being polite. Too many people these days see politeness as a weakness or a fault. At the risk of being down voted and I have to preface this with the fact that Obama, Jesse Jackson and Bill Cosby have all addressed this situation. The black community treats each other with the utmost of disrespect, its been referred to as, "who can get over" (Obamma quote). There was a post on here of the game "knock out" where kids look for someone to sucker punch. Charles Paine, the CNBC financial reporter once said when he was in school, he had to deliberately fail his classes because if the others knew he was achieving good grades or acting polite they would persecute him. Treating others as a customer would go a long way to solve many of the problems we have in this country.
Your comments of treating everyone like a customer is spot on and thank you for a well written and thoughtful post.
