Well, that isn't entirely accurate. The main reason that the USPS is having financial issues, is the burden Congress placed on it to fund its pension plan for 70 years. All of a sudden, they had a huge coverage gap.

In the free market, not only is there no mandate to fund your pensions for 70 years, but we can see the no companies WITH pensions plans do even half that. Also, at the very most, companies start saving for pensions as they hire...the USPS was instructed to start pension funds for people they hadn't even hired yet.
