The answer is compassion. i work part time at a home for abandoned sick people. Some of them are bed-ridden for a long time One lady is the happiest sweetest thing and content. I don't want a death panel deciding for her that her life is not worth living, Other are more out of it. We surround them with love as best we can. Then the discomfort is not so bad.
I am all for giving someone as much morphine as necessary to keep them comfortable. But mistakes are made too. For example one elderly man was written off as dying and they were going to refuse antibiotics and fluid. His daughter insisted on care and he recovered enough to read the paper. A better way maybe is to do develop better comfort care. When live is winding down, maybe it is better for people to be home with people that care, their pets and music that they like.
