Used frac water and drilling fluids are ejected into waste retention ponds that by State environmental law are required to have impermeable barriers lining them. By law this water is filtered and cleaned before it is trucked to waste water treatment plants or facilities run by private organizations that offer well pad services.

There will be no vegetation around as it is a fire hazard. All well pads have to have a defined distance from the well head to the nearest tree line or flammable vegetation. It is a safety issue.
