Did we want them free. Or did Command want Iraqis occupied and purged?
In Christmas 1975, my Father-in-law gave me a copy of
"The Moon is down" by John Steinbeck.
This was Colonel Lanser's second occupation. The first in WWI.
The tales of the occupations in Viet Nam, Afghanistan, and Iraq are just history repeating itself.
Having never been part of an occupying force, it seems to me that Steinbeck had a good sense of what has happened during occupations throughout history.
Your description reminded me of Steinbeck's short story.
