Are you sincerely asking? If so

Early in Mass we confess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confiteor
So, a "getting" off the sin hook... maybe it helped some people mentally who had cpommittee great sins and had mental breakdowns and no meds? We are all sinners.

"I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God."

Cresent Moom and star are for Mary, the Mother of God, the only human free of sin, which is taken from scripture http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/dictionary/in...

As for the shamfull child abuse: "By 2009, U.S. dioceses have paid more than US$2.6 billion in abuse-related costs since 1950.[103][104]"

personally, I think the Church was infiltraited to be taken down http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_sex_abuse_cases wiki tells the gloabl story.. and just because of there churchs or temples are not mentioned.. doesn't mean child abuse never happened or is not happening.

Catholic Church offers 73 books (more than anyone else) and chapters and books are reserved for scholars, could be a number of reasons.. here is where faith plays a role..
