Happiness is a measure of quality of life

What causes happiness from person to person is certainly subjective. However, the happiness of a population can be measured more or less effectively through polling and the proper application of statistics.

The optimal moral code would serve to maximize happiness among those affected.

This is one of the reasons why the libertarian philosophy is so attractive. Under it, people are free to do what they want as long as their actions don't harm others. Libertarianism respects human nature, in that it doesn't expect individuals to conform to a cookie cutter design imposed through the force of law.
